So if you want to avoid fixes that fail and move towards sustainability in today's complex operating environment, I invite you to resist the instinct to resort to scenario exercises, or only do so in conjunction with systems thinking approaches. Systems thinking has proven effective at reflecting, rather than reducing, the complexity of human and natural systems and in identifying the most high-leverage activities to influence that system. With a newly-defined goal of intergenerational, global, and cross-sector sustainability, we need a new, more sophisticated toolbox for business planning.
