It has been a while since I have posted about my work with the Nokia 770, which is because I haven't done anything much with it other than use it the past few weeks. Today I do have some progress to report on the development front.
I had a lot of trouble getting a development environment set up on my SuSE Linux box. I finally came to the conclusion that it was not possible (at least for me). Then I found two blog posts that helped enormously on The Zack Experiment: Getting Started On 770 Development (For Mac & Windows Users) and Zack Ex #1: Easiest HOWTO On Nokia 770 Development Setup.
What Zack recommends is to use the VMWare Player with the Ubuntu Browser Appliance Virtual Machine. Full instructions are given in the first post listed above (which is actually the later of the two). This sets up a working Ubuntu Linux virtual machine on your Windows 2000/XP Professional box or Linux box. After you install the development environment per the instructions in the second post listed above, you are good to go. You end up with a GUI shell that looks like the Nokia 770 and on which (I am told) you can compile and run programs that you can later put into a .deb file to upload to the 770.
I say "I am told" because this is as far as I got. Actually, I ran gcc with the help switch to make sure I had a compiler. Then I stopped, for time reasons.
After school ends in mid-april I will have more time and will post more on 770 development. I am also looking into Python development, which all in all would be much easier.
